Robles-Wong v. California responds to Public Advocates and Californians for Justice lawsuit
Sacramento, Calif. – On May 20, 2010, a broad coalition of nearly 60 individual parents and students, nine school districts and three statewide education organizations filed a lawsuit seeking to declare the current education finance system unconstitutional. That lawsuit, Robles-Wong v. California, demands that the State provide a school finance system that supports necessary educational programs and services and ensures all children an equal opportunity for success in school.
Today, Public Advocates and Californians for Justice filed a separate lawsuit that also challenges the public school finance system. That lawsuit is a further reflection of the widespread belief that California's school finance system is broken and must be fundamentally reformed.
The State has failed to live up to its basic constitutional obligation to provide a sound, stable, and sufficient school finance system, and should seize this opportunity to reform its public school finance system in the most efficient and expeditious manner possible.
